The dark bay gelding prompted a suicidal opening quarter of 21.13 before gaining command with a half-mile fraction of 44.50 en route to a 7 1/4-length victory in 1:03.75. Trained by Kenneth Nolen, Rodeo Cash was bred in New York by the McKathan Farms of brothers J. B. and Kevin McKathan of Citra, Florida. He is among 22 winners in 2004 sired by syndicated New York stallion Rodeo (Gone West - Wewarrenju, by Damascus), who stands at Gus Schoenborn Jr.'s Contemporary Stallions in Coxsackie for a 2004 fee of $3,000, live foal. A Hypo-Mating check of Rodeo Cash's pedigree reveals that he is inbred 3 x 5 to Damascus and 4 x 5 to Raise a Native and that his dam, Alyann, is inbred 3 x 4 to Nijinsky II.

(5/16) Rodeo Licious rolls gate to wire in 27th Bouwerie

With a successful stakes-winning resume compiled while competing mostly against open company, Our Blue Streaks Stable's and Pre K Stable's RODEO LICIOUS faced some of the toughest New York-bred three-year-old fillies in her crop in Belmont's $113,600 Bouwerie Stakes on Sunday and prevailed by a front-running hard-fought length. The seven-furlong Bouwerie marked Rodeo Licious's first effort beyond six furlongs, and although her speed justified third choice status at 2.65-to-1 among 11 starters, horseplayers liked the chances of multiple stakes winner Capeside Lady (favored at 1.60-to-1) and recent Aqueduct 8 3/4-length winner Mistda (2.30-to-1) better. No one was surprised to see Rodeo Licious -- the youngest starter in the event with a May 3 foaling date -- move out to a length and a half lead following an opening quarter-mile in 22.16 under jockey Michael Luzzi, who was race-riding her for the second consecutive time. Five furlongs later, the chestnut filly showed a new dimension when she fought back to hold off Mistda and Capeside Lady, who placed second and third, respectively.

Capeside Lady, recently honored as New York Thoroughbred Breeders 2003 Champion Two-Year-Old Filly, was a factor throughout the contest, trailing Rodeo Licious in second place through most of the race and continually inching closer. At the head of the stretch following a half-mile in 45.48, the favorite appeared to have caught the front-runner, who was floundering next to the rail while still running on her left lead. When Rodeo Licious seemed destined for no better than a runner-up role, she suddenly appeared to swerve and duck in, switched to her right lead, and apparently regained her composure and her momentum, gaining a half-length mid-stretch advantage over Capeside Lady following a six-furlong fraction in 1:10.17. In the final furlong, Rodeo Licious edged away from a weakening Capeside Lady while under left-handed urging from Luzzi and reached the wire a length in front of Mistda in the time of 1:23.07.

Jockey Luzzi acknowledged that Rodeo Licious has her quirks, including her reluctance sometimes to switch leads: "She's fast, but she's a little ornery in the post parade and paddock. The help did a good job with her today keeping her quiet, and the pony boy did a good job, too. Once she gets in the gate, she takes a deep breath, relaxes, and leaves there full of run. The only other quirk she has is her leads. In her last start, she didn't switch leads, but in her last workout, I got her to switch leads. I got her to switch today -- a little late -- but at least she knows now she's supposed to do it. She's not real graceful about it, but she needs to do it. It looked like she was drifting in the stretch, but that was me trying to get her to switch. She's got a lot of heart. (Trainer) Bruce (Levine) has done a great job with her."

Victory was worth $68,160 to the Blue Streaks Stable run by managing partner Neal Galvin of Saratoga Springs and comprised mainly of partners from that area, along with Pre K Stable, boosting Rodeo Licious's career bankroll to $185,660 while improving her record to 4 - 2 - 0 in six starts. Trained by Bruce Levine since she returned from a 10-month layoff this spring, Rodeo Licious had won her first start of 2004 by 5 1/2 lengths in the mud at Aqueduct on April 3 in a restricted N2X allowance going six furlongs under Luzzi. Over the ensuing 43-day span, Levine had given the front-running speedster four workouts over Belmont's training track, the most recent of which was a moderate five-furlong drill on Tuesday, May 11. As a two-year-old, Rodeo Licious had broken her maiden almost exactly a year ago at Belmont by 4 3/4 lengths against open company -- beating at least two subsequent 2003 stakes fillies -- and had captured Belmont's open Fashion Stakes going five furlongs in the mud by a length and a half. She was weighted at 104 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for two-year-old fillies of 2003 and remains unbeaten at Belmont in three outings there.

Bred by Glenn Brok, who qualified for the maximum $10,000 breeder award, Rodeo Licious was purchased for $25,000 at Fasig-Tipton's 2002 Saratoga preferred New York-bred yearling sale by trainer Carl Deville on behalf of the filly's current owners. Deville trained Rodeo Licious through her juvenile season.
Rodeo Licious, who beat fillies by sires standing for $50,000 and $35,000, is by New York stallion Rodeo (Gone West - Wewarrenju, by Damascus), a former Belmont speedster (six furlongs in 1:08 4/5) standing at Gus Schoenborn Jr.'s Contemporary Stallions in Coxsackie for a 2004 fee of $3,000, live foal. Rodeo, who is among at least five Gone West stallions that have sired 2004 stakes winners (Elusive Quality, sire of Triple Crown contender Smarty Jones, is another), is the property of a syndicate which qualified for a $4,771.20 stallion award as a result of the Bouwerie victory by Rodeo Licious. The Bouwerie winner is the fifth offspring, fifth winner, and second New York-bred winner bred by Brok from the mare Shorty's Promise, a winning daughter of Reckless Blade (by Blade). Shorty's Promise, who arrived in New York in time for the 2000 foaling and breeding season (when Rodeo Licious was conceived), is a Michigan-bred and is a half-sister to three-time Michigan-bred restricted stakes winner Reely Risky ($159,244). A Hypo-Mating check of Rodeo Licious's pedigree reveals that she is inbred 4 x 5 to eight-time leading sire Bold Ruler.

4/3) Rodeo Licious returns a winner

Our Blue Streaks Stable's and Pre K Stable's RODEO LICIOUS returned to the races today after a 9-month layoff and easily defeated a contentious state-bred field of fillies and mares, three year-olds and upward at Aqueduct Racetrack. Rodeo Licious won the open company $80,000 Fashion Stakes run last June at Belmont Park, under the care of trainer Carl De Ville, in her last outing as a two-year-old and is now trained by Bruce Levine. Jockey Mike Luzzi was named to ride the chestnut daughter of Rodeo and a field of 7-horses went to the gate with Rodeo Licious being sent off as the prohibitive 1-2 favorite.
Rodeo Licious stormed out of the gate over the muddy main track immediately grabbing the lead. Fly With Karakorum chased in second to the quarter-pole reached in a snappy 21.4 before joining the leader as they raced past the half-mile in 45.1 seconds. At the top of the stretch, Rodeo Licious shook off the challenge of Fly With Karakorum, who lugged in midway through the stretch, and drew off to win by 5-1/2-lengths. Final time was 1:10.4 seconds.
Bred by Glenn Brok, who qualified for a breeder's award of $5,400, Rodeo Licious was purchased as a yearling at the August 2002 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Preferred sale for $25,000. Rodeo Licious is by Rodeo, out of the Reckless Blade mare, Shorty's Promise, a half-sister to stakes winner Reely Risky (Reel On Reel). The talented filly has now banked $117,500 in 5-career races.
The Rodeo syndicate qualified for a stallion owner's award of $1,890. Rodeo stands at Gus Schoenborn, Jr;'s Contemporary Thoroughbreds in Coxsackie, New York. Rodeo Licious is from the second crop of Rodeo (Gone West-Wewarranju, by Damascus), who is starting to come into his own in the breeding shed with progeny earnings of over $460,000 this season placing him fifth among the leading New York-based stallions.

3/28) Gates Avenue gallops by 4 1/4 in N2X test

William Punk Jr.'s and Philip DiLeo's homebred GATES AVENUE went through his state-bred conditions with a flourish on Sunday, leading at all calls at odds-on (.90-to-1) to win by 4 1/4 lengths in Aqueduct's seventh race, a $45,000 restricted N2X allowance for three-year-olds and up going seven furlongs. Ridden for the fifth time in five career starts by Jose Espinoza and competing against older rivals from outside his crop for the first time, the late-foaled (May 7, 2001) three-year-old faced off against five four-year-olds, but did not seem to be intimidated. Although Gates Avenue broke dead last from the inside post-position, Espinoza hustled the colt forward to get the lead and secure the rail position with an opening quarter-mile in 23.12. A half-length back on his outside was 4.50-to-1 third choice Dixie Bourbon, who was coming off a March 6 Aqueduct allowance win, but Gates Avenue kept that rival at bay through a half-mile in 46.56 while bucking a 22-mph north/northeasterly crosswind that was gusting to 28 mph. In the stretch, the favored chestnut colt began pulling away on an Aqueduct strip that was noticeably fast along the rail, setting a six-furlong fraction of 1:11.17 while drawing off to a 2 1/2-length advantage and reaching the finish under a hand ride in the time of 1:24.12. Dixie Bourbon continued on to place second, followed by two four-year-olds -- 3.10-to-1 second choice Stars Aligned and 17.40-to-1 fifth choice Chute the Breeze -- who were carrying equal weight with three-year-old Gates Avenue (under 116 pounds) because of their jockeys' five-pound apprentice allowances.
Trained by David Donk, who had given the colt two solid half-mile workouts over Belmont's training track on March 13 and 23 following a four-length victory in a restricted N1X Aqueduct allowance on February 12 at six furlongs, Gates Avenue boosted his earnings by $27,000 to $86,019. He also improved his record to 3 - 1 - 0 in five starts, with his only unplaced effort coming in his lone venture around two turns and his first encounter with an off track when he ran sixth in Aqueduct's Damon Runyon Stakes over a sloppy track on December 17. Gates Avenue had broken his maiden by 2 3/4 lengths going seven furlongs at Aqueduct in his second career start as a two-year-old on November 27. The colt's Sunday victory also qualified breeder and co-owner Punk of Manhassett for a $5,400 breeder award.
Gates Avenue is from the second crop of New York stallion Rodeo (Gone West - Wewarrenju, by Damascus), whose syndicate owners qualified for a $1,890 stallion award. Sire of New York-bred 2003 open Fashion Stakes winner Rodeo Licious from his first crop, Rodeo stands at Gus Schoenborn Jr.'s Contemporary Stallions in Coxsackie, where his 2004 fee is $3,000, live foal. Punk and DiLeo also are the owners and breeders of Gates Avenue's four-year-old full brother, Nick the Vest, who broke his maiden at Aqueduct on February 8 by coming from off the pace at a mile and a sixteenth under Espinoza. Nick the Vest and Gates Avenue are the first two offspring produced from Erins Eyes, who is by Boundary (by Danzig) and was purchased by Punk and DiLeo for $135,000 at Fasig-Tipton's 1997 Saratoga select yearling sale. A Hypo-Mating check of Gates Avenue's pedigree reveals that he is inbred 3 x 4 x 4 to Hall of Fame member and prominent sire Damascus, with dam Erins Eyes being inbred 3 x 3 to Damascus and sire Rodeo being out of a Damascus mare.

2/27) My Man George romps in state-bred allowance

The Richard Dutrow, Jr. trained MY MAN GEORGE proved much the best against NW-2X state-bred allowance horses, four year-olds and upward, winning by over 8-lengths. Sent to the post as the 4-5 favorite, My Man George was ridden to victory by jockey Julian Pimental in the 8-horse field. Owned by the partnership of Vincent Scuderi, Oak Side Farm, managed by Joseph A. Ingrao and Billmicktony Stable, managed by William Kavanov, My Man George started his racing career at Churchill Downs before being purchased by Vincent Scuderi and sent to Dutrow, Jr., the meet's leading trainer. The four-year-old chestnut gelding has now raced three-times for his new connections, winning twice and finishing second in his last outing. My Man George carried the highweight of 123lbs spotting his rivals from 3-5 lbs.
A freshened-up Cargo Ship, went to the lead from his inside post tracked closely on the outside by My Man George, as they opened up by three-lengths on their nearest competitors, Smoke and Fame and Pert Reply. After a quarter in 23 seconds, My Man George moved alongside Cargo Ship as they raced past the half-mile pole in 46.1, battling head-to-head to the eighth-pole before My Man George drew off, lengthening his lead with every stride. Cargo Ship held for second over the fast closing Uncalculated. Final time was a snappy 1:10.4.
Bred by Gus Schoenborn, Jr. at his Contemporary Thoroughbred Stallions in Coxsackie, New York, My Man George is from the first crop of Rodeo (Gone West) who is now listed 4th on the 2004 listings for progeny earnings with over $300,000. Out of the Linkage mare, Serious Dancer, My Man George is the fifth horse to race from the stakes-placed dam, a 100% producer. The sire, Rodeo, stands at Contemporary Thoroughbreds and is owned by a syndicate, who qualified for stallion owner award of $1,890. As breeder, Gus Schoenborn, Jr. qualified for a breeder's award of $5,400.
My Man George has now earned $61,800 since returning to New York and raised his total lifetime earnings to $80,820 in 8-starts.

2/11) Icicle Charlie romps in 2004 return

Cedar Meadow Stable's ICICLE CHARLIE, away from the races since December 19th when he finished third before being moved up to second-place by the stewards, returned to the races today at Aqueduct Racetrack and iced a 9-horse field of three year-old state-bred maidens by 12-1/2-lengths. The race was run over the inner-track labeled "fast" at a mile and seventy-yards. Icicle Charlie, trained by Mike Sedlacek and ridden by leading jockey, apprentice Pablo Fragoso, who qualifies for a 5lb. weight allowance, went to the post as the even-money favorite.
Gina's Star won the race into the first turn opened up a three-length lead over Icicle Charlie down the backstretch. Increasing his lead to four-lengths, Gina's Star reached the half-mile pole in 48.4 seconds, however he easily gave way to Icicle Charlie who glided passed to take command. As the field turned for home, Icicle Charlie began to draw well clear of the field increasing his lead with every stride, a much the best winner. Gina's Star managed to hold off Got My Geht by a length for second money. Final time was 1:44.3 seconds.
Bred by Paul Giardina (Cedar Meadow Stable), who qualified for a breeder's award of $5,040, Icicle Charlie is out of the second-crop of Rodeo, a son of Gone West, who stands at Gus Schoenborn's Contemporary Thoroughbred Stallions in Coxsackie, New York. Rodeo is a syndicated stallion and for today's score, his connections qualified for a stallion owner award of $1,764. Icicle Charlie, a three year-old bay colt, is out of the stakes-placed winner Breezethruthetrees, by Big Spruce and has now earned $43,260 in six-career starts.
